The first day of the Ryder Cup produced some great golf as the USA powered into a 3 point lead. Heading into today's matches with a 5.5 to 2.5 advantage in their quest to regain the cup, the Americans are now favourites to regain their golfing pride.
After some ropey play in the morning foursomes, the Europeans got their act together somewhat in the afternoon fourballs. Unfortunately for them, they still couldn't hang on to a lead and the Americans played tremendously to win both sessions. In particular, the Harrington/McDowell vs Mickelson/Kim fourball match was fantastic, with 18 birdies and only 1 bogey between them. The Americans prevailed on the 18th green in a top quality encounter.
Hopefully the Europeans will be able to cut the deficit today to set up an exciting day of singles competition tomorrow.
