2013 - Week 26 Winners

Paul Casey (ranked 43rd by Golf Predictor) won the Irish Open on the European PGA Tour. The 35 year old Englishman finally put his injury woes behind him by winning his twelfth tour title at Carton House. Casey played superbly on the final day, carding a 67 (-5) in very testing wet and windy conditions. Indeed, he secured the title in style, closing with an eagle on the par five finishing hole. Our top ranked player, Rory McIlroy, kept his recent poor form going by missing the cut in front of his home fans. Overall, we had only five of the top eighteen plus ties (5/21) in a event plagued by poor weather.

Bill Haas (ranked 12th by Golf Predictor) won the AT&T National on the US PGA Tour. The 31 year old American won his fifth tour title with an assured final day performance on the tough Congressional layout. Our top ranked player, Adam Scott, finished in tied 57th and in an event where a lot of the bigger names failed to perform, we had only three of the top sixteen plus ties (3/21) in total.

Field Ranking Pages Enhanced - Wins & Top 10s

Field Ranking Page for 2013 US Open with new Wins/Top Ten Options
The 'Field Rankings', 'Compare Field Rankings' and 'Compare Field Rankings (Groups)' pages have been enhanced with new metrics for wins and top tens. These pages are available on the 'Predictions' menu in the member section of Golf Predictor. As shown in the image above, four new options have been added to the 'Metric' dropdown list on the 'Field Ranking' page. These metrics are most wins in the current season, most wins in last twelve similar events, most top tens in the current season and most top tens in last twelve similar events. That brings the total number of metrics on this page to twenty. There is also a new chart link along the top of the data table, which shows the top performers for each of these new metrics graphically.

As shown in the image below, there are four new columns on the 'Compare Field Rankings' pages (any ten golfers & tee-off group pages) which show the player's field ranking for that new metric. Due to space restrictions, the player name columns have been replaced with the player ID, similar to the original 'Compare Predictions' page. The Golfer ID is shown beside the player name and, as shown below, you can hover over the ID in the table to see the associated name. The stacked chart along the top of the data table has also been updated to include these new rankings.

Compare Field Ranking Page for 2013 US Open with new Wins/Top Ten Columns & amended first column
Finally, I have changed the display of information in the 'Field Rankings' page for unsubscribed members. Up to now, non-subscribers could only see those with field rankings in a given metric from 11-25. This would usually be different from those ranked 11-25 overall by the GP prediction engine. Therefore, they could see some limited prediction information on golfers ranked outside 11-25 in the GP rankings (which, as non-subscribers, they should not have access to!) who happened to appear in the 11-25 field ranking list for a metric. Now, the golfer information is hidden unless they are also ranked between 11-25 in the GP rankings. The subscribe message has also been updated to reflect this change. This is shown in the screen shot below for the field rankings for the Season Average metric for the 2013 US Open:

New subscribe message and hidden information on Field Rank page (non-subscribers)
Note that in relation to the new metrics added, the top ten information and charts are not available prior to week 43 of the 2008 season. Also, you may have to refresh the page to see the changes. Just another way to make Golf Predictor even better!

2013 - Week 26 Predictions/Statistics Updated (AT&T)

The predictions and statistics for the AT&T National (US PGA Tour) have had to be updated on Golf Predictor. This was because the top world ranked golfer in the field, Justin Rose, withdrew from the event since the original predictions were generated. Understandably, Rose cited fatigue in the wake of his US Open victory as the reason for pulling out. Note you may have to reload any pages already viewed to see the new rankings.

2013 - Week 26 Predictions/Statistics Online

The predictions and statistics for this week, the Irish Open (European PGA Tour) and the AT&T National (US PGA Tour), are now available on Golf Predictor. No Tiger Woods at Congressional this year due to his elbow injury, but the two most recent major champions are there to take up the slack! Meanwhile, here in Ireland, two other relatively recent major champions (and home favourites!) are headlining the field at Carton House.

2013 - Week 25 Winners

Ernie Els (ranked 2nd by Golf Predictor) won the BMW International Open on the European PGA Tour. The 43 year old South African won his 28th tour title and his first since last year's Open Championship with a one shot victory over Thomas Bjorn. That should give him a nice fillip ahead of his title defence in Muirfield in a few weeks. Our top ranked player, Sergio Garcia, finished in tied 7th and we had thirteen of the top eighteen plus ties (13/21) in total.

Ken Duke (ranked 52nd by Golf Predictor) won the Travelers Championship on the US PGA Tour. The 44 year old American journeyman finally secured his first tour title on the second hole of a play-off with Chris Stroud. The latter had chipped in at the last to force the play-off, but after a fine approach at the second extra hole to a few feet, Duke was not to be denied his maiden PGA Tour victory. Our top ranked player, Justin Rose, finished in tied 13th, which was a valiant effort considered the week the newly crowned US Open champion must have had! Overall, we had seven of the top eighteen plus ties (7/23) in total.

Most/Least Consistent Golfers on the 2011 European/US PGA Tours

Using the standard deviation (SD) information in Golf Predictor, it is possible to see who were the most/least consistent performers in the 2011 season on the European/US PGA Tours*. Steve Stricker retained the mantle of most consistent golfer from 2010, improving his already impressive performance in this regard by about 30%. Indeed, Stricker was the most consistent of any golfer who played at least five tournaments in 2011, nevermind those who played fifteen events. The top five consistent golfers in 2011 were:

2013 - Week 25 Predictions/Statistics Online

The predictions and statistics for this week, the Travelers Championship (US PGA Tour) and the BMW International Open (European PGA Tour), are now available on Golf Predictor. After the excitement of another European win at the US Open, it's back to the grind! As usual, most of the bigger names are taking the post major week off, but the Travelers Championship has the newly crowned US Open champion Justin Rose, headlining the field. Lee Westwood and Bubba Watson are two other big names teeing it up in Connecticut. On the European Tour, the German crowd also has a few big names, including Sergio Garcia, American Dustin Johnson and home favourite Martin Kaymer to cheer on.

2013 - Week 24 Winners

Justin Rose (ranked 10th by Golf Predictor) won the US Open on the European/US PGA Tour. The 32 year old Englishman finally won his first major with a fine level par 70 on the brutal Merion layout. Rose was an emotional winner, embracing his playing partner and compatriot Luke Donald and looking up to the heavens to his dad on Father's Day. Our top ranked player, Tiger Woods, didn't play well and finished poorly over the weekend to end up in tied 32nd. Overall, we had nine of the top seventeen plus ties (9/20).

Simon Thornton (ranked 86th by Golf Predictor) won the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open pres. by Neuflize OBC on the European PGA Tour. The 36 year old Irishman won his maiden tour title with a play-off victory over Tjaart van der Walt. Both players finished the wind affected event on -5, but Thornton prevailed on the first extra hole to take the title. Similar to Rose, he was also emotional in dedicated his victory to his late father. Our top ranked player, Simon Dyson, missed the cut and we had seven of the top twenty two plus ties (7/27) in an event that is traditionally hard to predict. On this particular occasion, the windy conditions didn't help matters.

2013 - Week 24 Predictions/Statistics Updated (US Open)

The predictions for the US Open (European/US PGA Tour) have been updated on Golf Predictor. This was done due to an updated weather forecast of higher winds and more rain since the forecast on Monday. Given the import of the tournament, I decided to re-run the predictions engine at this unusually late juncture. In any event, the overall rankings haven't changed very much as the GP Score for each golfer has been amended by a small amount. However, the similar weather panel on prediction pages for each golfer may be considerably different.

Note that you may have to reload any pages for this tournament that you have already viewed to see the updated data.

More 'Compare Tee-off Groups' Pages Added to Golf Predictor

Snippet of new Compare Form (Groups) page for the second group in the 2013 US Open
Further to the recently added 'Compare Tee-off Groups' page, I am happy to announce the addition of two new 'Tee-off Groups' pages to Golf Predictor in time for this week's US Open. These two new pages are the tee-off groups equivalents of the existing 'Compare Form' and 'Compare Field Rank' pages. Similar to the original tee-off groups page added a few weeks ago, you can now conveniently compare the form* and field rankings** for each member of the tee-off group. Similar notes apply for these new pages:
  1. As the golfers in each group are predetermined, there is no need for a 'Compare' button on the new 'Compare Field Rank' page. Simply selecting a different group in the dropdown list will result in the prediction data being updated to show the information for the new group.
  2. There is a 'Compare Group' button on the 'Compare Form' page as you must select a metric (finishing position, round scores, made cut and finishing score) and a scope (chronologically, on the same course/in the same tournament and in similar events).
  3. For any other match-ups not involving members of the same tee-off group, you will have to continue to use the original 'Compare Field Rank'/'Compare Form' pages.
  4. The group information for a tournament will be available from when the tee-off  information is inputted until when the results for one of the tournaments that week are inputted into the database. This will generally be from Tuesday evening to Sunday evening (GMT) of the tournament week.
  5. Only the tee-off groups for the first two rounds (assuming a normal event with the cut after two rounds) with will be entered into the system. Groups for the weekend rounds will not be inputted at this point.
  6. The Member section menus have had to be updated to reflect the addition of these new pages. The 'Prediction' menu now has four Compare links, two for comparing predictions and field rankings for up to to ten golfers and their two tee-off group equivalents. The 'Form' menu similarly now has two Compare Form options.
  7. You may have to reload your current Golf Predictor page to see these new "Compare Groups" menu options.
Just another way to make Golf Predictor even better! These new pages will greatly assist in analysing tee group match-ups for an event. The screenshot above shows the Compare Form (Tee-off Groups) for the second group for the 2013 US Open. This group contains Nicolas Colsaerts, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson and their results in their previous ten majors is shown in the table as a result of the dropdown choices. As with the original Compare Form page, hovering over a T1-T10 cell in the table shows more information in a pop-up. This is shown above for Bubba Watson for his second place in the 2010 US PGA Championship.

As each group contains golfers with varying GP rankings, only subscribers can use these new pages (non-subscribers are limited to golfers ranked 11-25). So, sign up today and reap the full benefits of Golf Predictor, the premium professional golf statistics site.

*Form available for various metrics in the last 10 tournaments in the following categories: chronologically, on the same course/in the same tournament and in similar events. The metrics available are finishing position, round scores, made cut and finishing score.

**The metrics ranked are average for the current season, average in previous five events in the current season, average on same course in the previous five years, average in same tournament in the previous five years, average in previous twelve similar event, world ranking, cut streak and winless streak.

2013 - Week 24 Predictions/Statistics Online

The predictions and statistics for this week, the US Open (European/US PGA Tour) and the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open pres. by Neuflize OBC (European PGA Tour), are now available on Golf Predictor. The excitement is mounting for the second major of the season at Merion Golf Glub in Pennsylvania. With world number one Tiger Woods misfiring last time out and world number two Rory McIlroy in a prolonged slump, it should be an interesting week of golf on the short layout. Defended with penal rough and treacherous greens, Merion will favour brains over brawn, especially if the putting surfaces recover from the heavy rains that has been pummelling the course. Meanwhile, it's a weak line-up as usual in France this week where only three of the top 200 in the world teeing it up in Saint Omer.

Sunday 9 June 2013

2013 - Week 23 Winners

Joost Luiten (ranked 5th by Golf Predictor) won the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity on the European PGA Tour. The 27 year old Dutchman overcame a shaky start on the final day to win his second tour title by two shots. Our top ranked player, Bernd Wiesberger, finished in tied 14th, which was just shy of what he needed to qualify for next week's US Open (top twelve finish). Overall, we had twelve of the top nineteen plus ties (12/24) in total*.

Harris English (ranked 35th by Golf Predictor) won the FedEx St. Jude Classic on the US PGA Tour. The 23 year old American won his first tour title with a nerveless back nine on Sunday to win by two shots. Scott Stallings will be kicking himself though, having let a winning position slip on the closing stretch. Our top ranked player, Brandt Snedeker continued his poor form since returning from injury by missing the cut. A lot of the bigger names failed to perform in this final tune-up for the US Open and we had eight of the top eighteen plus ties (8/26).

*Whiteford was a non-finisher, thus promoting Liang into the top 24 in the GP rankings.

New Nine Holes at Carne Golf Club

Location of Carne Golf Course (Yes, people do live out there!)
This post is more of an advertisement for my local course than anything to do with Golf Predictor! On a trip home last weekend, I took the opportunity to walk (and climb!) the new nine holes at Carne. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Carne is already one of the best links courses in Ireland. Unfortunately for most people, it's also one of the most isolated courses in Ireland, located a few miles past Belmullet in the extreme north west of Mayo, a county in the west of the country (see Google Maps screenshot above). The good news though, is that the trip will definitely be even more worth it once the new nine holes are completed.

While some of the front nine in Carne may be a little bland, it really comes into own on the back nine. With Atlantic views, massive dunes, large valleys and signature undulating fairways, it's a wonderful test of golf. Little did I know in all those years of looking for my golf balls up on those dunes and down in those valleys on that same back nine that there were even better holes waiting to be sculpted out of the adjacent land!

Despite the weather and the lack of a guide, I was really impressed with what I saw. Although it was June, it was a sweltering 13C/55F with strong cooling wind, fog and light rain when I set out. As usual, the rain got worse at my furthest point from the clubhouse! Several new holes wind through large dunes with relatively narrow fairways and feature signature elevation changes from tee to green, for example:
New hole carved out from between the large dunes
Another new hole has a wide fairway bifurcated by a large dune:
Large mound splitting a new fairway. The tees are to the right.
The same mound from back towards the tee of that hole shows you could easily have a blind shot or a tricky lie for your approach to the green:
The view towards the mound from in front of the tee boxes
You better go left or right of the mound as the green is small and protected at the front by bunkers and on every other side by nature:
Nice little pot bunker just to the front and right of the green

This was another challenging looking hole, predominately downhill with an elevated small green, also protected by sand to the front and by nature on every other side:

Taken from a plateau looking towards the elevated small green!
The closing hole on this new nine looks like a great finishing hole. The following shows the view down the last new fairway from the ladies' tees:
The clubhouse is almost within reach!
The men's tees are further back and higher up. I was too wet and tired at this stage to climb back up!  Anyone worried about the possible lack of undulations in the new fairways can relax. The following picture was taken in the middle of the final fairway at eye height (and I'm 6'2"!):
A view from the final fairway not far in front of the green!
These nine new holes will be fantastic when complete and I would encourage all golfers to come and try them out when they are open for business. This is due to happen on a limited basis for visitors from August to October this year. However, having seen the current state of the expansion, I'd be surprised if this new nine holes were open for play in eight weeks time. In the meantime, the existing eighteen holes will make you more than happy that you made the trip! I may be tempted out of golfing retirement myself by these super looking extra holes!

See part two of my report on the new nine holes.

New Stats Links Panel Added to Prediction Page

New panel on the Prediction page showing links to golfer's official stats pages.

The prediction pages on Golf Predictor have been updated to show links to the performance stats for the golfer on the two major tour sites. The screenshot above shows the new panel that displays these links. This new panel was added because I have got a number of requests over the past year or two for stats such as GIR, driving distance, driving accuracy etc. Unfortunately, it is not feasible for me to add such data directly into Golf Predictor. Moreover, I believe a lot of these stats tend to cancel themselves out and the most important one is the scoring average* (which is basically an amalgam of all those stats), which is on the site. Anyway, I recently thought of this compromise that I have now implemented. Instead of going to great effort every week to import two lots of this data (one for each tour) into the system,  I simply provide a handy link straight into the relevant page on the official site(s) for the golfer of interest. Some notes on these links:

  1. I could only source the links for just over 400 golfers on each tour. This covers all the bigger names though and is the list of players available on both major tour sites.
  2. Some golfers only have pages on one tour, in which case "n/a" is displayed instead of the image link.
  3. If the golfer has no stats page available, an appropriate message is shown in the panel instead.
  4. The stats available on the US PGA Tour 's player profiles is much more comprehensive than the corresponding page on the European PGA Tour site.
  5. The official stats page will open up in a new browser window. You can return to Golf Predictor by simply closing it when finished.
  6. The official tour pages for each golfer shows his latest stats. Keep this in mind if you are perusing the predictions for a past tournament.
  7. I will try to add links to more golfers on a regular basis or when I spot a new golfer with (an) available performance stats page(s). If you spot a missing link (so to speak!), please contact me and I will update the system.

Just another way to make Golf Predictor a little better for its valued members!

*e.g. it's no good having great GIR stats if you're a relatively bad putter!!  If you look at most of the metrics, the top guys in each category are not performing that well in tournaments! The scoring average list, on the other hand, is one of the most accurate (which it should be, by definition!).

2013 - Week 23 Predictions/Statistics Online

The predictions and statistics for this week, the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity (European PGA Tour) and the FedEx St. Jude Classic (US PGA Tour), are now available on Golf Predictor. Even though it's the last chance for a tune up before the next major of the season, the US Open, there aren't many of the top golfers playing this week. Mickelson is probably the biggest star teeing it up in Memphis, while home favourite Wiesberger will be trying to defend his title in Austria.

2013 - Week 22 Winners

Mikko Ilonen (ranked 15th by Golf Predictor) won the Nordea Masters on the European PGA Tour. The 33 year old Finn ended his six year title drought by comfortably closing out the victory in Sweden. Leading by two shots after the third round, Ilonen was never troubled on the final day and ended up winning by three after a closing 69 (-3). Our top ranked player, Peter Hanson, finished in 30th and we had nine of the top fourteen plus ties (9/19)

Matt Kuchar (ranked 3rd by Golf Predictor) won the Memorial Tournament pres. by Nationwide Insurance on the US PGA Tour. The 34 year old American won his sixth tour title in the testing conditions at Muirfield Village. Like Ilonen, Kuchar was never really troubled on the final day, even if runner-up Kevin Chappell did finish strongly with four birdies in his final six holes. Our top ranked player, Tiger Woods, bucked his recent hot streak with a poor performance. Despite multiple wins this season and at this tournament, Woods had three triple bogeys and sett his career high score for nine holes (44) in the third round. He eventually finished in tied 65th, but he wasn't the only big name to misfire. World number two, Rory McIlroy, had another poor week, barely scraped into the weekend. Overall, we had just five of the top sixteen plus ties (5/19).
