It must be the worst kept secret in golf that Colin Montgomerie has been dramatically offered the job of Captain for the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales. While other established golfing greats such as Sandy Lyle and Jose Maria Olazabal were the frontrunners, Monty's name unexpectedly came to the fore at the recent European Tour Tournament Committee meeting.
Word on the street is that the players favoured a younger man who was more in touch with the current players. Many took this as a swipe at the outgoing captain, Nick Faldo, who was never much of a people person (to say the least!). Lyle's runner from last year's British Open didn't do him any favours and Olazabal wants to play his way on the team. Many, including Harrington, were surprised that Monty would take the job now instead of doing likewise. Many thought he would set his sights on the role for the 2014 Ryder Cup in his native Scotland.
Still, the European Tour seem to be making a hames out of the appointment procedure. We here at Golf Predictor don't know why they thought it wouldn't get out. Full marks to the decisive Americans for the announcement of Corey Pavin as their captain. Let's hope all this pfaffing around is not a sign of things to come for the Europeans.
